Tenses: Present Continuous (ടെൻസുകൾ: ഇപ്പോൾ നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്)

Hi, my dear student! We learned that "I eat an apple every day" is Simple Present, right? It means you eat apples usually.

But what if you are eating an apple right this moment? What if the action is happening NOW, as we speak?

This is called Present Continuous Tense.

What is Present Continuous Tense? (എന്താണ് Present Continuous Tense?)

  • This tense is for actions that are happening right now, at this very moment.

  • The action started some time ago and is still going on. It has not finished.

  • Keywords: now, right now, at this moment, currently.

How to make Present Continuous Sentences? (Present Continuous വാക്യങ്ങൾ എങ്ങനെ ഉണ്ടാക്കാം?)

This tense has a special rule for the action word. You need two parts:

  1. 'am', 'is', or 'are' (these are called 'helping verbs')

  2. The action word (verb) with '-ing' at the end.

Let's see who uses 'am', 'is', or 'are':

  • I always use am.

    • I am playing.

    • I am eating.

  • He, She, It, or one person/thing use is.

    • He is playing.

    • She is eating.

    • The dog is sleeping.

  • You, We, They, or more than one person/thing use are.

    • You are playing.

    • We are eating.

    • They are reading.

Let's look at examples! (ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ നോക്കാം!)

  • Simple Present: I play every day. (ഞാൻ എല്ലാ ദിവസവും കളിക്കുന്നു.)

  • Present Continuous: I am playing football now. (ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ ഫുട്ബോൾ കളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.)

  • Simple Present: She reads books. (അവൾ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിക്കുന്നു.)

  • Present Continuous: She is reading a book right now. (അവൾ ഇപ്പോൾ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.)

  • Simple Present: They go to school. (അവർ സ്കൂളിൽ പോകുന്നു.)

  • Present Continuous: They are going to school at this moment. (അവർ ഇപ്പോൾ സ്കൂളിൽ പോയിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.)

Instructions: Read each sentence carefully. Choose the correct action word that tells us what is happening right now or at this moment.

(ഓരോ വാക്യവും ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ വായിക്കുക. ഇപ്പോൾ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഈ നിമിഷം എന്താണ് സംഭവിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് കാണിക്കുന്ന ശരിയായ വാക്ക് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക.)

Exercise 1: Choose the Best Form! (ഏതാണ് ശരിയായ രൂപം? തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക!)

Circle or write the correct word to complete the sentence.

  2. My brother usually ________ (read / reads) books in the evening.

  3. I ________ (am drawing / draw) a picture at this moment.

  4. They ________ (play / are playing) football every Sunday.

Exercise 2: Complete the Sentence! (വാക്യങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തിയാക്കുക!)

Complete the sentences using the correct form of the action word in ( ). Remember to use am/is/are and add -ing.

  1. She ________ (eat) her lunch now.

    • Correct: She ________________ her lunch now.

  2. We ________ (watch) TV at this moment.

    • Correct: We ________________ TV at this moment.

  3. The dog ________ (sleep) under the tree.

    • Correct: The dog ________________ under the tree.

  4. I ________ (learn) English right now.

    • Correct: I ________________ English right now.

Exercise 3: When is it Happening? (എപ്പോഴാണ് ഇത് സംഭവിക്കുന്നത്?)

Read the two sentences. Which sentence tells us about something happening RIGHT NOW? Write 'a' or 'b'.

  1. a) My mom cooks dinner every day. b) My mom is cooking dinner now.

    • Which one? ________

  2. a) The boys are playing outside. b) The boys play outside every evening.
